What is the purpose of The Peer Project?

  • The Peer Project is a non-profit organization that focuses on working with at-risk and newcomer youth in Toronto. Their main purpose is to support and transform the lives of young children aged 6-15 years, through peer mentoring, and many other programs (The Peer Project, 2019). They were founded on 1976 and they have been thriving ever since. They have helped over 30, 000 kids across the GTA and York Region. They have a 98% success rate when it comes to keeping the children that they work with, out of the criminal justice system (The Peer Project, 2019). They believe that what they are doing works, because the children that they mentor “stay out of trouble, turn around and give back to their communities, and many come back to be mentors themselves” (The Peer Project, 2019). They host events where they get the mentors and children interact with one another to find their perfect match. They do this mainly because they want the children to look at their mentors as people who they look up to, and be a positive role model for them.
